Cy’s origin story…

Tim was using Jasper.ai to help write articles for his technology career. After a few articles, he started to wonder how writing with Artificial Intelligence would impact creativity. So, he ran a few experiments and then a few more. Soon, Tim found that AI was a powerful tool for pushing his imagination further.

After a few short stories, Tim began tackling novel length projects using Goosebumps as his model for engaging Middle Grade readers. Instead of writing horror, Tim focused on adventure stories that tapped into his love of horror, mythology and kids going on adventures in their backyard.

 

The Creative Process

Let’s be clear, the content from AI is hardly ever taken “as created”. There is almost always some transformation that occurs to match the AI produced work with the creative vision of Tim.

Tim’s creative process with AI is roughly the following:

  • Tim ideates a story.

  • Tim partners with a Natural Language Generation (NLG) system to create the words of the story. Some words Tim writes. Some words the NLG system writes.

  • Tim reviews and refines the story, sometimes using the NLG system to clarify points or flesh the story out.

  • Tim works with human editors to clean up, clarify, and flesh out the story further.

  • Tim works with copy editing software and human copy editors to clean up more.

  • Tim works with Text-to-Image (T2I) systems to build the illustrations for the story.

  • Tim cleans up and improves the images from the T2I system to match the theme and content of the story.

Why Middle Grade?

Artificial Intelligence will be to the current middle grade students what the Internet was to Millennials. It will be part of how they think about the world. Cy Borgmyn is an experiment in creativity that is focused on ensuring we demonstrate how to use AI to enhance and amplify human creativity.

Every Cy Borgmyn book ends with an exploration in using AI for creativity. Activities are provided to help the reader build their creative muscles with AI.
