How to Read the Field Journal
Every story begins at the county line.
There may be a title, a few characters, or one scene I can't stop thinking about. There may be pages already written. But the road ahead is still mostly dark, and I don't know everything waiting out there. That is why I don't track my books with percentages. A story isn't a loading bar. It is a route through unfamiliar country — and this map shows you where each of mine is standing right now.
THE ROUTE
The Progress Map
Every active story has a token on the map. The farther it travels from the County Line toward the Archive, the closer it is to being finished. Follow the road left to right, top to bottom. Hover a stop to see who's standing there.

Thirteen Stops to Publication
Each tile tells you what kind of work is happening, what ground has been covered, and what still stands between the story and print.

I have committed to the story. The case file is open, but the territory ahead is mostly unknown.
Outlining & worldbuilding
Old Service Road
The story is taking shape through research, planning, worldbuilding, outlining, and exploratory work. The road is visible. I am still figuring out where it leads.
Drafting the manuscript
Deep Woods
The first draft is underway. This is the longest and least predictable part of the journey. Some weeks cover miles. Others lead me in circles until I find the trail again.
Rebuilding the draft
Abandoned Structure
The first draft exists, and now I am rebuilding it. Scenes move. Walls come down. Hidden rooms appear. This is where a rough manuscript begins becoming the book I meant to write.
Structural analysis
The Discovery
I am studying what the story has become. Writing-coach work, structural analysis, and focused review reveal what the book is actually doing—and what it still needs.
Developmental editing
Excavation Site
Developmental editing is underway. I am digging into character, structure, pacing, stakes, theme, and continuity. The story is here. Now I have to uncover it without breaking the important pieces.
Line editing
The Long Walk Home
The large story work is stable. Line editing sharpens the prose, strengthens the voice, and makes every scene carry its share of the weight.
Proofreading
Evidence Lockup
The text is nearly final. Proofreading and consistency checks catch the repeated words, missing punctuation, continuity slips, and other small things that become enormous the moment a book is printed.
Out with beta & ARC readers
County Sherif’s Office
The manuscript has gone to outside readers. Beta readers, advance readers, or other trusted eyes are checking what I brought back and telling me what they found.
Covers, formatting & files
Printing House
The story is becoming a book. Covers, formatting, ebook files, print editions, metadata, proofs, and retailer systems all come together here.
Launched — out in the world
Main Street
The book has launched. It is in stores, in readers’ hands, and no longer belongs only to me.
Shelved in the canon
The Archive
The launch is complete, and the book has joined the permanent body of my work. The case file remains on the shelf, ready to be reopened for a new edition, an anniversary, or another reason to return.
OFF THE MAIN ROAD
Detours, Closed Roads & Cold Trails
Creative work does not always move forward in a clean line. Sometimes a later book sends me back to repair an earlier one. Sometimes a project needs to wait. The map shows that honestly.
The Cold Trail
The project is intentionally paused. It has not been abandoned. I am giving it time until I am ready—or know enough—to return.
Road Closed
Something specific is preventing meaningful progress. Another decision, project, person, or missing piece has to move before this road opens again.
Do Not Return
I have intentionally ended the project. I use this marker carefully. A difficult week is not enough to put a story here.
THE HONEST ANSWER
So, How Complete Is It?
The location gives you a more honest answer than a percentage ever could, but will this map change…eventually.
As I explore using it and thinking about it more and more, we’ll see changes. For now, here’s a quick mapping to the creative process outside of landmarks and tiles.

The story is being discovered and drafted. There is still substantial country ahead.
Abandoned Structure → Excavation Site
The full story exists, but its shape is still changing.
The Long Walk Home → County Sheriff’s Office
The book is becoming stable, polished, and tested.
Printing House
The manuscript is nearly finished and publication work has taken over.
Main Street
The book is launching now.
The Archive
The book is published and the primary journey is complete.
The map will change.
